Christmas/New Year's

We didn't do anything too special for Christmas or New Year's this year.  Matt and I had a single glass of wine and went to bed at 1130pm on NYE.  (We remembered to ring the bell at midnight, though.)

Christmas was great, and a little sad at the same time, too.  Every Christmas Eve we go to my grandmother's house and pass out presents for my mother's side of the family.  This year though, everyone was just... old.  I'm not saying that because I'm being snotty, either.  My grandfather traditionally passes out the presents from under the tree, but he doesn't walk so well anymore.  Matter of fact, neither do my grandmother, one of my uncles, or my mom.  It's a little overwhelming to think that someday, not too far in the future, the traditional Christmas Eve festivities are going to end because I'm the only one left.  Not that Matt and I won't have traditions of our own, but... it's Christmas Eve.  Christmas Eve is when you go to Gram and Gramp's.  Period.  End of list.

/sigh.

But Matt got me a great present.  He got me NWN2 (Neverwinter Nights 2) for the PC and a couple of the second edition Exalted books-- the core book and the storyteller's companion.  Of course, that means that he wants me to run a game.    His CD came a couple days late, but he sat right down and listened to it right away.  He really seemed to enjoy it.

OH!  And I went to breakfast with the girls!  Molly, Jennifer, Gretchen and I-- the old posse from high school days-- went out to breakfast day after Christmas.  It was great getting everyone together again, seeing as we haven't all been in the same room since graduation, if I recall.

I'm so bad at giving Christmas presents.  I never can hold out until Christmas to give them!  I gave Matt the first few yesterday.  (Since I'm at work, I can't post pictures, but I may later).  Until then, a link!

I also gave him issues #25 and #26 of an X-Men offshoot where they introduce Legion, Professor X's son.  He's Matt's favorite supervillain.  It sounds silly, but he quite seriously looked at me and said the magic words:

"Honey, this is the best Christmas present ever."

I've been reading a series of books by S.M. Stirling lately, since Jerrod was nice enough to lend them to me. I'm on The Protector's War right now. Essentially the gist is that there was a huge EMP engineered that knocked out (permanently) all electronics and combustion engines in the world. That doesn't necessarily sound so bad, at first glance; difficult as it would be, we could live without email and TV, right? But when one examines it a little closer, it gets pretty hairy. No vehicles in action means no food delivered; no medicine is manufactured, no refrigeration keeps food cold. In cities, panic takes over when everyone realizes that a couple flower gardens aren't going to feed millions of people. One in two hundred people dies in the best of circumstances, and in urban areas, *everyone* dies. Looting and banditry takes over for those who don't want/don't know how to farm. So it made me think-- if that really did happen, would your skill set be useful? Let's see... I've had some rudimentary training in swordplay and armor making, and I'm pretty sure with a little practice I could turn out a set or two of chain. I have some basic agricultural and medical skills. I've played D&D for quite a while, and roleplaying survival skills doesn't leave you without some knowledge of them. I think most likely though, my usefulness would be more in teaching and music. With people breeding like rabbits in absence of birth control and no school system any longer, how long would people stay literate when there are fields to be tilled? There's a lot of useful knowledge in books that could mean the difference between surviving and not. And without TV and internet, a musician might come in pretty handy.

My downfall, of course, would be my sight. Without glasses, I can see a damn thing. That's a definite liability. That and I'm not in the best of shape; of course, most Americans aren't nowadays, but that's not really an excuse. So what do you think? Would you make it?

I'm almost out...

...of episodes of Smallville.  *cry*  I finished season 5 last night, and now I only have piecemeal episodes of season 6.  /sigh.

My car died the other day.  I was in McDonald's drive-thru when my cd player started getting static.  I tried adjusting the FM transmitter, but no go... then the blasted thing turned off altogether.  That was when I noticed that my windshield wipers were going veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery sloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooowly.  Joy.  So I turned off my wipers and lights and sat in the drive-thru in the rain for a bit.  My engine died at the pay window, and the guys came out and pushed me past the pick up window (where I snagged the food on the way by) and into the parking lot.  After I walked back to the store (in the rain and cold, thanks) George drove me back down and put a new battery in.  Thankfully that got me home, but I still had to buy a new alternator.  Yippee.  Matt and Richard put it in this morning for me, so I don't have to drive Matt's car anymore (which is good, seeing as the pipe that leads to his gas tank has a big split in it).

Sorry I haven't...

...posted in the past week or so.  I'm *still* tired from Black Friday.  The store did 18k that day though, 2.7k of which was mine, so all went well.  The week went thusly:

Wednesday morning: walked 3 miles with Maid of Honor Molly.  In steel-toed boots no less, since my sedentary lifestyle has never warranted having a serviceable set of sneakers.

Thursday: walked another three miles with Molly, this time in sneakers.  Went to Matt's mom's at 7 after he got out of work.  Didn't get home until 10, which didn't leave a whole lot of sleepy time before having to wake up for hell-- I mean, work.

Friday: Sold from 5:45am to 10:15pm.  Wowsers, what a day.  Went home and told our DM that I was under no circumstances playing tonight, since my eyes were about to fall out of my head.

Saturday: Rescheduled D&D game took place.  Looks like it'll be on Saturdays from now on, too.  Works for me!  Stayed up until 5:00am.

For now, I'm going to go convince myself not to fall asleep standing up.  I have the next two days off, which means I can indulge in my new guilty pleasure...

SMALLVILLE!
